A Palace Built for a Hero
Blenheim is unique. It is the only non-royal, non-episcopal country house in England to hold the title of "Palace". This grand title was bestowed as part of a gift from a grateful nation. In 1705, Queen Anne granted the land and funds to John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, to build a monumental house as a reward for his victory at the Battle of Blenheim in 1704.
Designed by Sir John Vanbrugh in the short-lived English Baroque style, the palace was intended to be a national monument as much as a family home. Its scale is immense, with 187 rooms spread over a footprint of seven acres. For over 300 years it has remained the principal residence of the Dukes of Marlborough, a lineage that includes Britain's most famous Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill, who was born within its walls in 1874.
